Generation V: The Unova Region

Let’s end things off with my personal favourite Pokemon games, Black and White. We’re going to be doing things a little differently, however. Instead of two blog posts in the week, I’ll be combining the two into one mega post! Without further ado, let’s get started.

The combined Unova region map (Pokemon Black/White & Black 2/White 2)

The Region Itself

The Unova region is based on The United States of America, but geographically it looks similar to New York City, with Manhattan being the central peninsula. The Unova region is the most natural-feeling 2D Pokemon region. Of course, after this they went to 3D and had the ability to make things a lot more natural. The cities in Unova are named after clouds. Take Striaton City for example. It’s named after stratus clouds.

The Unova region is my favourite region, but not really for the region itself. It’s more about the characters and Pokemon that inhabit the area that make the place so memorable to me. So, with that being said, let’s take a look at three characters and five Pokemon!

The People of Unova

N (Artwork from Pokemon Black/White)

N is one of your rivals, but he’s also associated with the evil Team Plasma. He is a prince, but he only plans to bring peace between humans and Pokemon. He’s actually a really nice guy, and cares about every living creature. He can even talk with Pokemon to a point by feeling what they feel. However, Ghetsis, the leader of Team Plasma and N’s father, is manipulating his plan to take over the region. Yeah, N has some backstory huh? You know his dad’s evil when he names his son Natural Harmonia Gropius. Yeah. That’s his full name.

Score: 9/10
Elesa (Artwork from a White Day promotion)

Elesa is the Electric type focused Gym Leader of Nimbasa City. On her off time, she’s a supermodel and a fashion star. She’s also in charge of the various attractions in Nimbasa City. She’s the most popular person in Unova, and maybe even the whole Pokemon world. Her design changes in the two years between the events of the first and second games.

Elesa’s new outfit in Pokemon Black 2/White 2

I really like Elesa. She’s my favourite Pokemon character ever, and both of her designs are amazing. I love the black and yellow, accentuating the electric motif. I also really like the subtle additions of red and blue, which represent and electromagnet. The way her blonde hair is changed to black to help keep it seperate from her giant jacket is genius in my opinion.

Score: 10/10
Brycen (Artwork from Pokemon Black/White)

Brycen trains hard to be the Ice type Gym Leader of Icirrus City. He is a ninja in his off time, but he is also a critically acclaimed actor. There’s not really much to say about Brycen, as he tends to stay stoic as a ninja. However, we can talk about his design. It’s really good! I love the colours and the crystal motif on his outfit. His mask goes up in diamond knots, which is a nice touch. I also like how his outfit is puffy and looks warm despite still looking like traditionally Shinobi-esc.

Score: 8/10

The Pokemon of Unova

Minccino (Mini+Chincilla+Chino Cloth) [Normal]

Minccino is technically the first Pokemon you see whenever you start your game, as the Professor who introduces you to the game sends one out. It likes to keep things tidy, and uses its tail to dust everything off before picking it up.

Score: 7/10
Beheeyem (BEM- Bug-Eyed Monster) [Psychic]

Beheeyem is an alien-like Pokemon that uses the lights on its hands to hypnotise its targets. I really like its design, and it’s a really creative and multilayered. It’s head looks reminiscent of the Liberty Bell, a United States landmark. It also looks like a detective, with a trench coat and the brown palette, that makes it look like the kind of person who would investigate an alien. It also has its previously stated hand lights, mimicking the lights commonly seen on depictions of UFOs. It’s just a really solid design and I wish it was seen more.

Score: 9/10
Golurk (Golem+Lurk) [Ground/Ghost]

Golurk is a GIANT Pokemon. It’s filled with powerful energy, and the bandage on its chest prevent that power from escaping. If it does escape, the results could be catastrophic. This thing is super strong and can do really anything you need it to. It can even fly by retracting its legs and using the skirt-like base as a rocket thruster.

Score: 7/10
Reuniclus (Reunited+Nucleus) [Psychic]

Reuniclus is an adorable jelly boy, and it’s probably my favourite Pokemon from Unova. It’s based on mitosis and a fetus, but it makes those cute and I praise it for that. It’s a squishy little fella and it has immense psychic powers due to it practically having two brains. It has extreme precision with its little jelly hands, too.

Score: 9/10
Whimsicott (Whimsical+Cotton) [Grass/Fairy]

Whimsicott was originally purely Grass type, until a generation later when they added the Fairy type. It floats around, letting the wild take it wherever. It’s just a laid back Pokemon! I really like how poofy it is and how it looks cottony without being outright cotton. It has charm to it!

Score: 9/10

Generation IV: The Pokemon of Sinnoh

The Sinnoh region has some really great Pokemon, but a lot of them are evolutions of previous Pokemon. Yadda yadda random generator chose eight let’s go.

Probopass (Proboscis+Compass) [Rock/Steel]

Probopass isn’t generally a Pokemon like, but I actually really like it. It has a big ol’ schnoz that acts like a super magnet. The mustache hair is really just metal filings attached to its nose! The other tiny noses are magnetically attached as well, but it can move them freely and use them for attacks. It’s just a silly design that I find really appealing!

Score: 8/10
Weavile (Weasel+Vile) [Dark/Ice]

Weavile is probably my favourite Ice type Pokemon. It just looks so cool! No pun intended. I love the colour scheme and the headdress it has and the gold eye emblem on the front. I don’t know why it has feathers but it works! I love the way it emotes too. It just looks so mischievous! It’s such a good Pokemon. It freezes its claws to attack with subzero slashes. The males have longer ears than the females. All in all a really n-ice Pokemon. Pun intended.

Score: 8.5/10
Bidoof (Beaver+Doofus) [Normal]

Bidoof is the best Pokemon ever it is the most powerful being in the universe and nothing will ever stop it.

Score: ∞/10

In all seriousness, Bidoof is by far the best early rodent Pokemon we’ve ever had. I don’t even like its evolution all that much, but for some reason I adore Bidoof. It’s such a good design. It seems as though they’re parodying themselves, since every game has had an early game rodent. They decided to have a little fun and be less serious with this one. It has a stubby stature and big bulbous fur on its face and butt. It’s really good!

(Real) Score: 8/10
Mothim (Moth+Him) [Bug/Flying]

Mothim is the male-only evolution of Burmy. I’m not a fan of Burmy, but I love moths. Moths are WAY better than butterflies in every way. Mothim is based on the bagworm moth, which only matures as a moth if it is male. I think it has an really nice palette that contrasts the other Pokemon in its evolution line. I really like the square tips on its wings and tail. They do a similar thing with Vivillion in Kalos, but we’ll talk about the butterfly when we get there.

Score: 7.5/10
Toxicroak (Toxic+Croak) [Poison/Fighting]

Toxicroak is weird looking, yet really cool looking at the same time. All of its parts separately looks so strange, but together it somehow works. Take the hand spikes for example. It looks like a pointy red middle finger. But it works with the rest of the designs. The only think I don’t understand is the head crest. It just doesn’t fit. I get it’s supposed to be like a spike to emphasise the pointy nature of this Pokemon, but I feel like there are better ways to do it.

Score: 6/10
Combee (Honeycomb+Bee) [Bug/Flying]

Combee is a really unique Pokemon. Earlier I talked about how Mothim is a male-only evolution. Well, female Burmy can still evolve, they just turn into Wormadam instead of Mothim. Combee, however, can only evolve if they’re female. The males don’t evolve at all! The females have a little red mark on their middle forehead. They evolve into Vespiquen, the queen bee of Combee. I think Combee is really cute, despite the questions having three heads can lead to. They’re much cuter than real bees, I’ll tell you that.

Score: 7/10
Garchomp (Gore+Carcharodon+Chomp) [Ground/Dragon]

Garchomp is the pseudo-legendary Pokemon of Sinnoh. It is Cynthia’s Ace, and there’s a reason why. It’s really powerful! It’s based on a land shark, and this land shark can go really fast. Apparently, it’s also based on a jet plane, since it can fly at Mach speeds. The head bulbs are reminiscent of turbines. Garchomp is in my top 3 pseudo-legendary Pokemon. It’s just got such a timeless design.

Score: 9/10
Giratina: Altered Forme (Girasol/Girare+Purachina) [Ghost/Dragon]

Giratina is the legendary Pokemon of antimatter. It was banished by Arceus to live in the Distorion Realm. The lore behind Arceus and Giratina hold similarity to Christian religion. Arceus, the highest order Pokemon, represents God. Giratina, in that case, represents Satan. It’s design represents that. It has six legs, six spikes on its wings, and six rib-like neck protrusions. This 666 motif is also evident in its Origin Forme.

Giratina: Origin Forme

It has six main spikes instead of legs, six spikes on its now tail-like wings, and the same six protrusions on its neck, just more open. Giratina is a really well designed Pokemon, and the start of something great. See, this is the generation where they started having a set lore and universe to the Pokemon World. They have a path they’re following, and they start going with a lot of alchemy inspiration in the future.

Generation IV: The Sinnoh Region

Diamond and Pearl (and Platinum) were the first games on the Nintendo DS, giving the developers more power and more space to work with. The Sinnoh region is last place based on locations in Japan. After this, they spread out at started placing their regions around the world. Fun fact: the Sinnoh region is the only region that doesn’t have a five letter name!

The Sinnoh region map (Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum)

The Region Itself

The Sinnoh region is the best region we’ve talked about so far geography-wise. It has many memorable locales and events that happen to the point where it feels real (at least compared to the previous instalments). It’s also a lot colder than other regions. Kanto and Johto were mostly standard planes and forests, and Hoenn was a bit more tropical and coastal. Sinnoh, on the other hand, is VERY snowy. It may not look like it from the map, but a majority of the map is at least low temperature climate.

Okay enough about the cold dirt. It’s character time.

The People of Sinnoh

To be honest, Sinnoh has really forgettable characters. I really only remember a few, and those few are amazing! The rest, though… not so much. So I had to pick out five of my favourites instead of the first five I clicked on.

Barry (Artwork from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl)

Barry is your rival in these games. He is a high-energy, highly motivated kid who often runs around to get where he needs to go (and that results in him running into things (and people) because he can’t stop himself). I really like Barry’s design. His hair waving out makes his hair unique, and they give him a Mickey Mouse quality to it in the mobile game Pokemon Masters (in the sense that his hair tufts are always facing the camera, regardless of Barry’s head position). I also really like the orange and green palette to his shirt and scarf.

Score: 8/10
Gardenia (Artwork from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl)

Gardenia is, if it wasn’t obvious, a Grass type Gym Leader. She lives in Eterna City. She is a cheery and energetic trainer. I get her confused with Erika a lot, but that’s just because they have somewhat similar designs. I will point out though; I don’t like Gardenia’s hair. It just doesn’t make sense to me! It throws the whole design off and it just doesn’t sit well with me. The rest of her looks great and unique and creative but her hair is so strange.

Score: 6/10
Candice (Artwork from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl)

Candice is the Ice type Gym Leader hailing from Snowpoint City. She’s pretty energetic for someone who lives in one of the coldest places in Sinnoh. You’d think she’d be cool, calm, and collected. She’s one of those people who doesn’t care about the cold, though. As you can see, she wears her coat around her waist. Her design is simple, but effective. It’s not one of my favourite designs, but I keep thinking of her whenever I think of Ice type trainers.

Score: 5/10
Cyrus (Artwork from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl)

Cyrus is the leader of Team Galactic, the antagonist team of this region. His goal is to take control of Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina to use their powers (space, time, and distortion respectively) to recreate the world in his image. A little more menacing than other evil teams’ objectives, huh? His a little bit of a troubled guy, so it’s sort of justified… if you can justify wanting to destroy everything on earth just to rebuild it your way.

Score: 7/10
Cynthia (Artwork from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl)

Cynthia is the Sinnoh region’s Champion, and is the first and only female Champion as of now. She may seem kind of edgy and cold in all that black, but she is actually a very laidback and caring person. She loves ice cream and goes on vacation in Unova so often she has her own beach house in Undella Town! She helps you out a lot across your journey, and even tries to assist you in stopping Team Galactic.

Score: 9/10

Generation III: The Pokemon of Hoenn

The Hoenn region has many Pokemon that are many fans’ favourites. I like a majority of them, but none of them are super high up on my list. Once again, I got a random generator and got eight Pokemon to review. Let’s go!

Mudkip (Shortening of mudskipper) [Water]

Mudkip is the Water starter in the Hoenn region, and the starter I chose on my journey. Karla Baez described Mudkip as an “unstoppable little creature.” It seems as though that is the case. Mudkip is adorable and it has a really nice colour palette! It was pretty unique at the time for a Water Pokemon to have orange so present in the design.

Score: 7/10
Ludicolo (Ludicrous+Colocynth) [Water/Grass]

Ludicolo is a very happy little tree monster thing. It dances constantly and is in a good mood 24/7. It’s design is inspired by Mexican clothes, namely the poncho and sombrero. It’s dancing isn’t necessarily based on anything, but in the anime it sometimes break dances. It’s design, while unique, isn’t anything super special. It’s a unique typing, but the water doesn’t really shine through as much as I would like.

Score: 6/10
Shedinja (Shed+Ninja) [Bug/Ghost]

Shedinja is a very interesting and unique Pokemon. It has a unique typing, and a unique ability. See, Shedinja is the result of a Nincada shedding it’s skin and evolving into Ninjask. Shedinja is the possessed husk of Nincada. That’s the reason it is so frail. It only has one HP! To counteract this, it has the ability Wonder Guard, which makes it so it can only take damage from moves that are super effective against it. I really like Shedinja, and it’s one of my favourite Pokemon in general.

Score: 9/10
Wailord (Whale+Wail+Lord) [Water]

Wailord is the biggest boi in the world. It’s bigger than a brachiosaurus from head to tail! Other than being the largest Pokemon ever, though, there’s not much to write home about. It’s design is simple and clean, which is a good thing. I’d just expect the design to be a little bit more for how gargantuan it is.

Score: 5/10
Absol (Absolute/Absolve) [Dark]

Absol is the harbinger of distaster. Or, at least that’s what people say. In reality, he’s much like the moth man of real legend. Not the bringer of doom, but rather the messenger. It warns people of incoming disasters but appearing in the areas where something bad will happen. I like Absol’s design. It’s simple and otherworldly, adding to the mystery. I especially like the Yin-Yang symbolism on its head.

Score: 8/10
Duskull (Dusk+Skull) [Ghost]

Duskull is a spooky boi. It’s skull and bone on it’s back symbolise death, but it’s just another spirit! It has a single orb inside of its head, which act as its pupils. I really like that trait! I haven’t seen it done before. Also how it looks like it’s wearing a cloak with its hands behind its back. It’s just a doofy-toothed spectre!

Score: 6/10
Spinda (Spin+Panda) [Normal]

Spinda’s dizziness is unrivalled! The thing is, it’s so dizzy it swirls up its spots. There are around 4 billion combinations of Spinda, as its spots are unique to each individual. They can be on the ears, the mouth, the eyes. There’s even a possibility it has no spots at all. Spinda is a simple design, but I like that. It leaves room for the spot gimmick to shine. I really like the swirly eyes and ears.

Score: 7/10
Deoxys (Shortening of Deoxyribonucleic Acid) [Psychic]

Deoxys is a mythical Pokemon who came to earth on a comet. It’s a virus-alien thing, and can transform into different forms to adapt to the situation. There’s its Normal Forme (top-left), then the Attack Forme (top-right), the Defense Forme (bottom-left), and the Speed Forme (bottom-right). I really like the orange/blue palette, and the way the Normal Forme’s arms coil around like DNA. It’s just a really solid designed Pokemon and you can tell a lot of time and thought went into this Pokemon.

Score: 9/10

Generation III: The Hoenn Region

The Hoenn region and the games they debuted in are some of the most beloved generations of Pokemon. I personally didn’t have a great experience with it. I played Alpha Sapphire, a remake that to many was disappointing. There’s only two generations I never finished, and that was it. Maybe sometime in the future I’ll give the originals a shot, but for now this review is an Alpha Sapphire review!

The Hoenn region map (Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)

The Region Itself

The Hoenn map, being on a new system from the previous two, has a lot more detail. It’s just a more populated area! However, it falls back into the problem Kanto had where it’s too blocky to be realistic. Especially for how much water is in the games, it just doesn’t look very natural. Speaking of water, THERE’S A LOT. The theme of the game is land vs. sea, so it’s understandable to have near equal parts. The problem with water, though, is that you’re a lot more likely to get Pokemon encounters. There’s no point in the water where you can have a guaranteed break, so many people dislike the water portions of the game.

The People of Hoenn

The Hoenn region is filled with many characters. More so than any place before! They are more individual and unique, so this time there won’t be as many Gym Leaders as before. There are still some, but that’s voluntary. I could fill this list without using any Gym Leaders. Anyways, let’s get started.

Wally (Artwork from Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)

Wally is one of your rivals in the Hoenn region. He’s a boy who has a rare sickness (never explained what exactly he has), and is finally taking on his own journey. He catches a Ralts, and it soon becomes his #1 partner. I like his design, with his wild green hair and an innocent school boy look to him. He’s a shy little kid who is trying to do his best.

Score: 7/10
Roxanne (Artwork from Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)

Roxanne is the Rock type Gym Leader hailing from Rustboro City. She uses a Nosepass as her Ace. On her off time, she’s a school teacher. I really like her design. It’s got that signature dull rock colouration, but she also makes her look unique with her magenta highlights. It even matches her Nosepass! I like how she looks studious but not overtly so. It still looks like something she could wear even if she wasn’t a teacher.

Score: 8/10
Winona (Artwork from Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)

Winona is the Flying type Gym Leader of Fortree City. She is so in tune with Flying Pokemon, that she practically considers herself a Flying Pokemon. She often says she’s “one with Flying Pokemon” and “one with the wind.” She can be found on high buildings, feeling the wind in her hair. I really like her design. The way her outfit looks like she flies on the daily makes it really interesting to look at. The way her hair flows so elegantly and even flips around in the front to create wings is so cool. The colour palette is really nice too! With the blue and white being complimented so well by her pale purple hair. This is one of those really out there designs that really work.

Score: 7/10
Wallace (Artwork from Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)

Wallace specialises in Water type Pokemon. In Ruby and Sapphire (and their respective remakes), he is the Gym Leader of Sootopolis City. In Emerald, he is promoted to being Champion of the region. He’s an artist and a fashion model. I like how he gives off Water type trainer energy without having anything Water related to his design. You could argue his blue-green droopy bits look like a waterfall, but that’s a bit of a stretch.

Score: 6/10
Courtney (Artwork from Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)

Courtney is an Admin for Team Magma, one of the antagonistic teams. Team Magma’s goal is to awaken Groudon and use it’s power over the earth to create a new region from scratch (over the Hoenn region). Courtney is, in my opinion, the single most unique character in Hoenn, and one of the most unique characters in the entire franchise. She’s sadistic, insane, and even creepy at times.

Courtney showing her deranged side

Courtney is in love with Maxie, the team leader, to the point of being obsessed with him. She speaks in strange patterns, and is one of the few characters in Pokemon to actually threaten the player (and not have it be cheesy). I really like her, and she’s my favourite character in Hoenn.

Score: 9/10

Generation II: The Pokemon of Johto

Johto has someone of my favourite Pokemon. Unfortunately, by laws of the random generator, I can’t talk about all of my favourites. However, I did get lucky and manage to get a couple, so it’s not all bad!

Without further ado, let’s review these eight Pokemon!

Murkrow (Murky+Murder+Crow) [Dark/Flying]

Murkrow is a crow with a little witch hat and broomstick! It’s so cute! I really like Murkrow. It’s design is so simple yet there’s so many little hidden traits that make it so you keep wanting to look at it to find each little nuance. Being the first Dark/Flying type Pokemon (Johto added the Dark and Steel types, so it wasn’t like it was a race), they did a great first impression! I just wish it’s evolution kept with the witch theme instead of becoming a mob boss (Honchkrow).

Score: 7/10
Ledian (corruption of Ladybug) [Bug/Flying]

Ledian is one of my all-time favourite Bug type Pokemon. It looks like a Power Ranger/superhero/alien and it just works really well! I love how everything is so round and soft, while also giving it a fighting appearance. The way the arms look like gloves are nice, and the antennae are probably my favourite part of the whole design.

Score: 8.5/10
Wooper (Wooper Looper) [Water/Ground]

Wooper is an axolotl, one of the most unique looking amphibians ever. It’s just a tiny little version of an axolotl! I love how circular it is, and how it always looks so shocked. There’s not much else to say about it. It’s a solid Pokemon, but not one I can talk about a whole lot. It just kind of exists and it’s a good thing it exists!

Score: 6/10
Shuckle (Shuck+Barnacle/Turtle) [Bug/Rock

Shuckle has the highest Defense stat of any Pokemon. It’s a tanky boy! Many competitive Pokemon players can use Shuckle in pretty crazy ways. There are moves that swap the Defense stat with the Attack stat, giving Shuckle the highest attack of any Pokemon. Then you can use a Trick Room, which lets slower Pokemon move first. Boom. Best Pokemon in the game if you can manage that. Its design is pretty bland, though. It’s just noodles sticking out of a mushroom-looking shell.

Score: 5/10
Slugma (Slug+Magma) [Fire]

Slugma sounds like such a no-brainer idea. Slimes are sometimes found in lava or fire variants in other RPGs. Slugs are just real life slimes. It’s a perfect match! I love the little droopy bits on its mouth, and the flame eye decorations. I also really like how its pupils are just dots. It gives a doofy expression that I really like.

Score: 6/10
Scizor (Scissor+Razor) [Bug/Steel]

The generator was really liking Bug types this time around. But this one’s a little special. It’s a really strong Bug type! I really like Scizor. Its crimson red steel coat with the black accents make me think of a sports car. The head is really unique and interesting as a silhouette. The way the pincers have dots to resemble eyes makes it look even more intimidating, paralleling real life as some animals have patterns to make them look scarier to predators. It’s just a really cool Pokemon!

Score: 8/10
Dunsparce (Dunce+Sparce) [Normal]

Dunsparce is one of the doofiest Pokemon out there, and it’s supposed to be that way! It’s got little useless wings, a big drill tail it with no purpose, and a strange colour scheme that really just makes it look so odd. But that’s what I like about it! It’s storing its energy and it’s destined for greatness some day.

Score: 6/10
Celebi (Celestial Being+Celery) [Grass/Psychic]

Celebi is one of, if not my favourite Mythical Pokemon. It’s the time travelling protector of the forest, and it really works well. I like the pale green it has, alone with the more lime green and the blue. The black rings around the eyes are the best part of the design, and honestly I don’t know why. It just looks really good! It’s head looks kind of like an onion, despite it’s name sounding like celery. But I think it’s harder to make celery look cute.

Score: 9/10

Generation II: The Johto Region

So Johto to me is just a better Kanto in every way. It has better Pokemon designs, better character designs, and better world building. And it seems like the creators thought that too. See, the games that house the Johto region also let you explore the Kanto region once you beat the main story. With that being said, let’s take a look at the Johto region.

The Johto region map (Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver)

The Region Itself

The Johto region has way better map design than Kanto. For one, it looks a lot more natural, and doesn’t have random paths stemming from nowhere that make it look unnatural. Everything, while still quite geometric pathing-wise, still looks believable.

The towns and cities are also more populated. They feel like liveable places and with the addition of the day/night cycle it makes the buildings light up and just adds that little bit more realism to the world.

But with the region being better, let’s see if the characters that inhabit it have improved as well.

The People of Johto
Whitney (Artwork from Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver)

Whitney is a Normal type Gym Leader of the Goldenrod City Gym. She’s known for her Miltank, which gave many people facing her a haunting memory. Personally, I didn’t have any more trouble with her than I did with any other Gym Leader. Her design is very clean, with some motifs working well with her Ace Pokemon. Namely, the white and pink colour scheme matching Miltank’s palette, and her hair looking somewhat like ears and her darker socks and shoes representing hooves. Her clothes are somewhat normal compared to others, which are fitting for her type specialty.

Score: 7/10
Morty (Artwork from Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver)

Morty is runs the Ghost type Gym in Ecruteak City. In the games he’s in, there aren’t many Ghost type Pokemon, so he only has Pokemon from one evolution line. His Ace is a Gengar.

Whitney’s (left) and Morty’s (right) original designs shown in the anime

The remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver, like the rest of the Pokemon remakes, redesigned all the characters. Some were slight, like Whitney. Others, like Morty, are practically new characters altogether. I really like the redesign of Morty, as it fits a Ghost type trainer a lot more. The pale yellow and blue would be fine for, say, and Electric or Water type specialist. I just don’t really think “spooky spectral being” when I see baby blue. The darker palette and the scarf with a bloody red tip make the whole design work. His hair even fits better, adding wavy tufts instead of just being a mullet.

Score: (Original) 2/10 (Redesign) 8/10
Clair (Artwork from Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver)

The Dragon type Gym Leader of Blackthorn City, Clair is the last person you face before the Elite Four. She fits her role well. Her design is reminiscent of a Dragonair, with light blue and darker blue scale-like patterns. Her hair is very whimsical and it looks very arcane. This is because her Ace Pokemon is Dragonair. I mean, in the original games she has three of them! Clair claims to be the best Dragon Master ever, and refuses to accept that you beat her until you navigate the Dragon Den. She has a really solid design, personality, and backstory and it all just fits really well together.

Score: 8/10
Karen (Artwork from Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver)

Karen is the Dark type Elite Four member of the Johto Indigo League. Her Ace Pokemon is a Houndoom. Gabi Johns, a student at Dodge City High School, said she was a “modestly endowed woman.” I’d say that statement isn’t true nor false. Anyways, she is actually very kind for being a specialist in the “evil” type. I think she’s purposely a sexy character to help represent her Dark type, as the few other Dark type trainers could represent the deadly sins. We’ll get into them later, but Karen could represent Lust. I think that’s neat.

Score: 7/10

Generation I: The Pokemon of Kanto

The original 151 Pokemon are somewhat hit or miss for me. Some of them are really good and solid designs, but others are kind of weak compared to later designs.

So what this portion of the blog is going to consist of is me reviewing the designs and origins from Pokemon I was given randomly from a generator online. Let’s start!

Snorlax (Snore+Lax) [Normal]

Snorlax is a big chonky boi who loves sleeping. It’s known for blocking paths by falling asleep while looking for food. Whenever he’s not asleep, he’s looking for food. He’s blue and cute and ready to snuggle.

Hypno (Hypnosis) [Psychic]

Hypno is infamous for being “The Pokemon that kidnaps children” in Kanto. It hypnotises children and lures them to it’s home where I can only assume it tortures them. It’s a gross, big-nosed gremlin and I hate it and it’s disgusting.

Score: 3/10
Wartorle (War+Tortoise+Turtle) [Water]

Wartortle is the middle stage of the Water type starter’s evolution line. It’s my favourite of the starter Pokemon! It’s so majestic yet tough looking. Its tail and ears are such a nice shade of blue and they look so flowy and cute. It’s an amazing design.

Score: 8/10
Gastly (Gas+Ghastly) [Ghost/Poison]

Gastly is one of those simple “sphere with eyes” that plagued the first generation. However, this is the only one I think is still a solid design. It’s a gas cloud, and it’s the first stage of its evolution line, so the simple design works. I like how the eyes go off the face. It makes it really unique, since not many other Pokemon have that look.

Score: 7/10
Mewtwo (Mew+Two) [Psychic]

Mewtwo is a man made Pokemon made by genetically altering the DNA of another Pokemon named Mew (hence the name). It is one of the most popular Pokemon worldwide, and he’s also one of the strongest. Its design is alien-like, with grotesque anatomy and a mostly rounded-shape. I really like its design, but I tend to like cuter designs, so I prefer the original Mew over it.

Score: 6/10
Alakazam (Abra Kadabra Alakazam) [Psychic]

Alakazam is also a powerful Pokemon. It has a super stronk brain, giving it incredible psychic ability. It’s often associated with spoons, as it likes to bend them to train its mental prowess. I really like it’s look. It’s got some animalistic traits, like horns and claws, but it has armour and a giant mustache which makes it look human. It’s yellow and brown palette also gives it an otherworldly look.

Score: 7/10
Eevee (Evolution) [Normal]

OKAY RANT TIME LOOK HOW CUTE THIS POKEMON IS OH MY GOSH IT IS ADORABLE AND NOTHING COULD EVER TOP IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH I WILL PROTECT IT’S PRECIOUS LITTLE SOUL WITH MY LIFE.

Okay so Eevee is my favourite Pokemon as you can see. Just look at it! Eevee is the Evolution Pokemon, and it’s given that classification because its DNA is unstable. It is very prone to being affected by its surroundings, and can evolve into many different Pokemon. It’s the only Pokemon that can evolve more than 3 ways! There’s Flareon, Jolteon, Vaporeon, Umbreon, Espeon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon (Fire, Electric, Water, Dark, Psychic, Grass, Ice, Fairy respectively). So with that all being said, can you guess what score I’m gonna give it?

Score: 10/10
Electrode (Electrode) [Electric]

Here’s another one of those “spheres with eyes” I was talking about. Electrode and its pre-evolution are based on Pokeballs, the devices used to catch Pokemon. Electrode is an upside down Pokeball. It’s most well known for exploding and powering big machines. I don’t really like Electrode. It’s boring. Especially since Voltorb, its pre-evolution, has a more creative face than Electrode’s two dots and a smile.

Generation I: The Kanto Region

Welcome to my first blog post! This will basically just be me (VERY OBJECTIVELY AND TOTALLY NOT OPINIONATED OR BIASED AT ALL) reviewing every Pokemon Generation. I’m counting a Pokemon Generation on a new region and whatever lore, characters, and Pokemon come with that region. So to start, let’s take a look at the first region introduced; the Kanto region.

The Kanto region map (Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

The Region Itself

Being originally introduced on the Game Boy back in 1996, the map isn’t super detailed. Even with the remakes’ graphic upgrades, the geography is pretty basic compared to later entries. There’s a lot of angular turns in paths, square rock formations, and oddly uniform tree borders. I think the worst addition is the jarring path going right up through the middle of the region. It doesn’t look natural at all, and just makes the whole map look blocky and awkward.

Sure, this could just be a limitation of the hardware that limited how they could design the region. However, no changes were made in any way for future updates. The most recent time we’ve seen the Kanto region is in Let’s Go! Pikachu and Let’s Go! Eevee on the Nintendo Switch. For how much of a graphical leap almost every aspect of the region they made in 20 years, they missed the opportunity to alter it and make it more realistic and liveable like the later titles.

The towns also don’t feel very lived in, but I’ll give them some slack because, again, it’s a limitation of hardware at the time. They did make an effort to add more people to the world; those you can battle and those who just add to the world building. That being said, let’s take a look at some of my favourite characters.

The People of Kanto

This section of the review is, in essence, going to be a photo of the character followed by a short bio and then my opinion on them. I’ll also be giving them a rank out of ten. So let’s just get into it.

Professor Samuel Oak (Artwork from Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

Professor Oak is a staple in the Kanto region. He’s the first face you ever see, even before your own. He is the one who gives you your starter Pokemon; Bulbasaur, Squirtle, or Charmander (Or Pikachu/Eevee depending on what game you’re playing). He also gives you the Pokédex, and asks you to log every Pokemon you find along your journey. His design is a classic look, with his iconic whitened hair and massive eyebrows.

Score: 8/10
Brock (Artwork from Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

Brock is the Rock type Gym Leader of Pewter City. He is the first Gym Leader you fight, and his Ace Pokemon is an Onix. Brock is also a classic character. In the anime, he’s Ash’s longest companion, following him through four regions. His eternally closed eyes, his green and orange palette, his stern exterior with a soft and loving interior. These traits make him one of the most memorable characters in Kanto.

Score: 6/10
Misty (Artwork from Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

Misty is a confusing character for me. Her original depiction always felt lacking to me. Personality wise she was fine with her tomboy attitude. It was her design I wasn’t a fan of. She just didn’t look like she fit the Water type Gym Leader role. Her new design in the Let’s Go! games is a lot more appealing to me and it makes her look more aquatic. Her top reminds me of a whale, with the lighter belly and the way it splits to look like a tail fin. She makes Cerulean City proud now!

Score: 5/10
Erika (Artwork from Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

Erika is the Grass type Gym Leader of the Celadon City. She is a kind and caring soul through and through. She’s often found dozing off, even when she’s in her gym. Her design is simple, being in a green and red kimono and green slippers. It’s very aesthetically pleasing and she gives off a calm aura and she’s in my top three favourite Kanto residents

Score: 9/10
Janine (Artwork from Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver)

Janine is a strange case. She’s the Poison type Gym Leader of the Fuchsia City Gym. However, she’s only there in Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Before that (and even after in Let’s Go) the Gym Leader is Koga, Janine’s father. Personally, I prefer Janine because Koga is kind of dull personality wise. Janine is energetic and motivated to be a good ninja.

Score: 7/10
Sabrina (Artwork from Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

Sabrina is a Psychic type trainer. She lives in Saffron City, and is the Gym Leader there. She’s a mysterious character, acting very serious and almost stiff. In the anime, she’s possessed by a doll that controls her like a puppet. I really like her design. The dull red and dark sea foam green work really well together, and it’s broken up by patches of black so nothing’s too dominant. She’s probably my favourite character from Kanto.

Score: 9/10
Giovanni (Artwork from Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

Giovanni is the Gym Leader of Viridian City, and he specialises in Ground type Pokemon (although the Persian with him in the photo is a little deceiving). He’s also the mob boss of Team Rocket, an evil organisation motivated by money and theft. He’s sly and dark, but knows when to concede.

Score: 7/10
Lorelei (Artwork from Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu/Let’s Go! Eevee)

Lorelei is part of the Elite Four, the strongest trainers in the region and your final test before becoming champion. She trains Ice type Pokemon, and her Ace is a Lapras she uses as transportation. Her redesign for Let’s Go isn’t super different, but her hair tie is ice related, which obviously makes it better in my eyes. She’s my second favourite character.
