Generation V: The Unova Region

Let’s end things off with my personal favourite Pokemon games, Black and White. We’re going to be doing things a little differently, however. Instead of two blog posts in the week, I’ll be combining the two into one mega post! Without further ado, let’s get started.

The combined Unova region map (Pokemon Black/White & Black 2/White 2)

The Region Itself

The Unova region is based on The United States of America, but geographically it looks similar to New York City, with Manhattan being the central peninsula. The Unova region is the most natural-feeling 2D Pokemon region. Of course, after this they went to 3D and had the ability to make things a lot more natural. The cities in Unova are named after clouds. Take Striaton City for example. It’s named after stratus clouds.

The Unova region is my favourite region, but not really for the region itself. It’s more about the characters and Pokemon that inhabit the area that make the place so memorable to me. So, with that being said, let’s take a look at three characters and five Pokemon!

The People of Unova

N (Artwork from Pokemon Black/White)

N is one of your rivals, but he’s also associated with the evil Team Plasma. He is a prince, but he only plans to bring peace between humans and Pokemon. He’s actually a really nice guy, and cares about every living creature. He can even talk with Pokemon to a point by feeling what they feel. However, Ghetsis, the leader of Team Plasma and N’s father, is manipulating his plan to take over the region. Yeah, N has some backstory huh? You know his dad’s evil when he names his son Natural Harmonia Gropius. Yeah. That’s his full name.

Elesa (Artwork from a White Day promotion)

Elesa is the Electric type focused Gym Leader of Nimbasa City. On her off time, she’s a supermodel and a fashion star. She’s also in charge of the various attractions in Nimbasa City. She’s the most popular person in Unova, and maybe even the whole Pokemon world. Her design changes in the two years between the events of the first and second games.

Elesa’s new outfit in Pokemon Black 2/White 2

I really like Elesa. She’s my favourite Pokemon character ever, and both of her designs are amazing. I love the black and yellow, accentuating the electric motif. I also really like the subtle additions of red and blue, which represent and electromagnet. The way her blonde hair is changed to black to help keep it seperate from her giant jacket is genius in my opinion.

Score: 10/10
Brycen (Artwork from Pokemon Black/White)

Brycen trains hard to be the Ice type Gym Leader of Icirrus City. He is a ninja in his off time, but he is also a critically acclaimed actor. There’s not really much to say about Brycen, as he tends to stay stoic as a ninja. However, we can talk about his design. It’s really good! I love the colours and the crystal motif on his outfit. His mask goes up in diamond knots, which is a nice touch. I also like how his outfit is puffy and looks warm despite still looking like traditionally Shinobi-esc.

The Pokemon of Unova

Minccino (Mini+Chincilla+Chino Cloth) [Normal]

Minccino is technically the first Pokemon you see whenever you start your game, as the Professor who introduces you to the game sends one out. It likes to keep things tidy, and uses its tail to dust everything off before picking it up.

Score: 7/10
Beheeyem (BEM- Bug-Eyed Monster) [Psychic]

Beheeyem is an alien-like Pokemon that uses the lights on its hands to hypnotise its targets. I really like its design, and it’s a really creative and multilayered. It’s head looks reminiscent of the Liberty Bell, a United States landmark. It also looks like a detective, with a trench coat and the brown palette, that makes it look like the kind of person who would investigate an alien. It also has its previously stated hand lights, mimicking the lights commonly seen on depictions of UFOs. It’s just a really solid design and I wish it was seen more.

Score: 9/10
Golurk (Golem+Lurk) [Ground/Ghost]

Golurk is a GIANT Pokemon. It’s filled with powerful energy, and the bandage on its chest prevent that power from escaping. If it does escape, the results could be catastrophic. This thing is super strong and can do really anything you need it to. It can even fly by retracting its legs and using the skirt-like base as a rocket thruster.

Score: 7/10
Reuniclus (Reunited+Nucleus) [Psychic]

Reuniclus is an adorable jelly boy, and it’s probably my favourite Pokemon from Unova. It’s based on mitosis and a fetus, but it makes those cute and I praise it for that. It’s a squishy little fella and it has immense psychic powers due to it practically having two brains. It has extreme precision with its little jelly hands, too.

Score: 9/10
Whimsicott (Whimsical+Cotton) [Grass/Fairy]

Whimsicott was originally purely Grass type, until a generation later when they added the Fairy type. It floats around, letting the wild take it wherever. It’s just a laid back Pokemon! I really like how poofy it is and how it looks cottony without being outright cotton. It has charm to it!

Score: 9/10
