Generation IV: The Pokemon of Sinnoh

The Sinnoh region has some really great Pokemon, but a lot of them are evolutions of previous Pokemon. Yadda yadda random generator chose eight let’s go.

Probopass (Proboscis+Compass) [Rock/Steel]

Probopass isn’t generally a Pokemon like, but I actually really like it. It has a big ol’ schnoz that acts like a super magnet. The mustache hair is really just metal filings attached to its nose! The other tiny noses are magnetically attached as well, but it can move them freely and use them for attacks. It’s just a silly design that I find really appealing!

Score: 8/10
Weavile (Weasel+Vile) [Dark/Ice]

Weavile is probably my favourite Ice type Pokemon. It just looks so cool! No pun intended. I love the colour scheme and the headdress it has and the gold eye emblem on the front. I don’t know why it has feathers but it works! I love the way it emotes too. It just looks so mischievous! It’s such a good Pokemon. It freezes its claws to attack with subzero slashes. The males have longer ears than the females. All in all a really n-ice Pokemon. Pun intended.

Score: 8.5/10
Bidoof (Beaver+Doofus) [Normal]

Bidoof is the best Pokemon ever it is the most powerful being in the universe and nothing will ever stop it.

Score: ∞/10

In all seriousness, Bidoof is by far the best early rodent Pokemon we’ve ever had. I don’t even like its evolution all that much, but for some reason I adore Bidoof. It’s such a good design. It seems as though they’re parodying themselves, since every game has had an early game rodent. They decided to have a little fun and be less serious with this one. It has a stubby stature and big bulbous fur on its face and butt. It’s really good!

(Real) Score: 8/10
Mothim (Moth+Him) [Bug/Flying]

Mothim is the male-only evolution of Burmy. I’m not a fan of Burmy, but I love moths. Moths are WAY better than butterflies in every way. Mothim is based on the bagworm moth, which only matures as a moth if it is male. I think it has an really nice palette that contrasts the other Pokemon in its evolution line. I really like the square tips on its wings and tail. They do a similar thing with Vivillion in Kalos, but we’ll talk about the butterfly when we get there.

Score: 7.5/10
Toxicroak (Toxic+Croak) [Poison/Fighting]

Toxicroak is weird looking, yet really cool looking at the same time. All of its parts separately looks so strange, but together it somehow works. Take the hand spikes for example. It looks like a pointy red middle finger. But it works with the rest of the designs. The only think I don’t understand is the head crest. It just doesn’t fit. I get it’s supposed to be like a spike to emphasise the pointy nature of this Pokemon, but I feel like there are better ways to do it.

Score: 6/10
Combee (Honeycomb+Bee) [Bug/Flying]

Combee is a really unique Pokemon. Earlier I talked about how Mothim is a male-only evolution. Well, female Burmy can still evolve, they just turn into Wormadam instead of Mothim. Combee, however, can only evolve if they’re female. The males don’t evolve at all! The females have a little red mark on their middle forehead. They evolve into Vespiquen, the queen bee of Combee. I think Combee is really cute, despite the questions having three heads can lead to. They’re much cuter than real bees, I’ll tell you that.

Score: 7/10
Garchomp (Gore+Carcharodon+Chomp) [Ground/Dragon]

Garchomp is the pseudo-legendary Pokemon of Sinnoh. It is Cynthia’s Ace, and there’s a reason why. It’s really powerful! It’s based on a land shark, and this land shark can go really fast. Apparently, it’s also based on a jet plane, since it can fly at Mach speeds. The head bulbs are reminiscent of turbines. Garchomp is in my top 3 pseudo-legendary Pokemon. It’s just got such a timeless design.

Score: 9/10
Giratina: Altered Forme (Girasol/Girare+Purachina) [Ghost/Dragon]

Giratina is the legendary Pokemon of antimatter. It was banished by Arceus to live in the Distorion Realm. The lore behind Arceus and Giratina hold similarity to Christian religion. Arceus, the highest order Pokemon, represents God. Giratina, in that case, represents Satan. It’s design represents that. It has six legs, six spikes on its wings, and six rib-like neck protrusions. This 666 motif is also evident in its Origin Forme.

Giratina: Origin Forme

It has six main spikes instead of legs, six spikes on its now tail-like wings, and the same six protrusions on its neck, just more open. Giratina is a really well designed Pokemon, and the start of something great. See, this is the generation where they started having a set lore and universe to the Pokemon World. They have a path they’re following, and they start going with a lot of alchemy inspiration in the future.
