Generation I: The Pokemon of Kanto

The original 151 Pokemon are somewhat hit or miss for me. Some of them are really good and solid designs, but others are kind of weak compared to later designs.

So what this portion of the blog is going to consist of is me reviewing the designs and origins from Pokemon I was given randomly from a generator online. Let’s start!

Snorlax (Snore+Lax) [Normal]

Snorlax is a big chonky boi who loves sleeping. It’s known for blocking paths by falling asleep while looking for food. Whenever he’s not asleep, he’s looking for food. He’s blue and cute and ready to snuggle.

Score: 7/10
Hypno (Hypnosis) [Psychic]

Hypno is infamous for being “The Pokemon that kidnaps children” in Kanto. It hypnotises children and lures them to it’s home where I can only assume it tortures them. It’s a gross, big-nosed gremlin and I hate it and it’s disgusting.

Score: 3/10
Wartorle (War+Tortoise+Turtle) [Water]

Wartortle is the middle stage of the Water type starter’s evolution line. It’s my favourite of the starter Pokemon! It’s so majestic yet tough looking. Its tail and ears are such a nice shade of blue and they look so flowy and cute. It’s an amazing design.

Score: 8/10
Gastly (Gas+Ghastly) [Ghost/Poison]

Gastly is one of those simple “sphere with eyes” that plagued the first generation. However, this is the only one I think is still a solid design. It’s a gas cloud, and it’s the first stage of its evolution line, so the simple design works. I like how the eyes go off the face. It makes it really unique, since not many other Pokemon have that look.

Score: 7/10
Mewtwo (Mew+Two) [Psychic]

Mewtwo is a man made Pokemon made by genetically altering the DNA of another Pokemon named Mew (hence the name). It is one of the most popular Pokemon worldwide, and he’s also one of the strongest. Its design is alien-like, with grotesque anatomy and a mostly rounded-shape. I really like its design, but I tend to like cuter designs, so I prefer the original Mew over it.

Score: 6/10
Alakazam (Abra Kadabra Alakazam) [Psychic]

Alakazam is also a powerful Pokemon. It has a super stronk brain, giving it incredible psychic ability. It’s often associated with spoons, as it likes to bend them to train its mental prowess. I really like it’s look. It’s got some animalistic traits, like horns and claws, but it has armour and a giant mustache which makes it look human. It’s yellow and brown palette also gives it an otherworldly look.

Score: 7/10
Eevee (Evolution) [Normal]

OKAY RANT TIME LOOK HOW CUTE THIS POKEMON IS OH MY GOSH IT IS ADORABLE AND NOTHING COULD EVER TOP IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH I WILL PROTECT IT’S PRECIOUS LITTLE SOUL WITH MY LIFE.

Okay so Eevee is my favourite Pokemon as you can see. Just look at it! Eevee is the Evolution Pokemon, and it’s given that classification because its DNA is unstable. It is very prone to being affected by its surroundings, and can evolve into many different Pokemon. It’s the only Pokemon that can evolve more than 3 ways! There’s Flareon, Jolteon, Vaporeon, Umbreon, Espeon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon (Fire, Electric, Water, Dark, Psychic, Grass, Ice, Fairy respectively). So with that all being said, can you guess what score I’m gonna give it?

Score: 10/10
Electrode (Electrode) [Electric]

Here’s another one of those “spheres with eyes” I was talking about. Electrode and its pre-evolution are based on Pokeballs, the devices used to catch Pokemon. Electrode is an upside down Pokeball. It’s most well known for exploding and powering big machines. I don’t really like Electrode. It’s boring. Especially since Voltorb, its pre-evolution, has a more creative face than Electrode’s two dots and a smile.

Score: 2/10
